And yet, beneath all the optimisation, there’s a quieter question waiting: What actually supports me?

This is where the conversation between Yoga and Ayurveda becomes not just relevant, but essential.

The Meeting of Two Sister Sciences

Yoga and Ayurveda come from the same philosophical roots, both emerging from the broader Vedic tradition. If Yoga is the path of consciousness working with the mind, awareness, and liberation. Ayurveda is the path of embodiment, guiding how we live in and care for the physical body.

One might say: Yoga asks, Who am I beyond the fluctuations of the mind?

Ayurveda asks, How do I live in a way that keeps my system in harmony?

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali defines yoga as “Yoga chitta vritti nirodhah”, the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. It’s a profound and elegant definition, but it can feel abstract when your digestion is off, your sleep is irregular, or your energy crashes mid-afternoon.

Ayurveda fills in this gap. It recognizes that the mind and body are not separate projects. The state of your nervous system, your digestion, your daily rhythms, all of these influence your capacity for inner stillness.

In simple terms: it’s hard to meditate when your body is out of balance.

Understanding Your Inner Climate

At the heart of Ayurveda is the idea that each person has a unique constitution, often described through the three doshas: Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water).

Vata

Governs movement, creativity, and variability.

When balanced, it feels like inspiration

When imbalanced, like anxiety or restlessness.

Pitta

G overns transformation, focus, and intensity.

In balance, it’s clarity and drive

In excess, irritability or burnout.

Kapha

Governs stability, nourishment, and calm.

Balanced, it’s grounded-ness

When heavy, it can feel like stagnation.
<div fast-paced, heat-building vinyasa class might feel energizing to someone with a heavier Kapha constitution, but for someone already high in Pitta, it may quietly push them toward exhaustion or irritability. Similarly, an airy, unstructured practice may increase Vata, leaving the practitioner feeling scattered rather than centered.

The invitation here isn’t to categorize yourself rigidly, but to begin noticing: What brings me toward balance, and what pulls me away?

Abhyasa and Vairagya, Revisited

Patanjali offers two guiding principles for practice: Abhyasa (consistent effort) and Vairagya (non-attachment).

In modern wellness culture, we often cling tightly to Abhyasa ~ discipline, routine, doing the practice every day. But without Vairagya, that discipline can become rigid, even punishing.

Ayurveda introduces a softer intelligence into this equation. It reminds us that consistency doesn’t mean sameness. True practice adapts to the seasons, to life stages, even to the subtle shifts within a single week.

Abhyasa, through an Ayurvedic lens, becomes not just “showing up daily,” but showing up appropriately.

Vairagya becomes the willingness to let go of routines that no longer serve your current state.

Together, they form a living, responsive practice - one that listens as much as it acts.

Bringing. It. Into. Daily. Life.

Combining Yoga and Ayurveda isn’t about adding more rituals. It’s about refining your sensitivity to what already exists.

Imagine your practice as a conversation rather than a prescription.

On a day when your mind feels scattered and your body light, dry, or restless (classic Vata qualities), your yoga might lean toward slower, grounding movements, longer holds, and steady breath. You might favor warmth, both in your environment and in your meals.

On a day when you feel driven, intense, or overheated (Pitta rising), your practice could soften. Less competition, fewer extremes. Cooling breaths, gentler pacing, perhaps even stepping away from the need to “achieve” something on the mat.

And when heaviness or lethargy sets in (Kapha imbalance), you might invite more stimulation - stronger flows, invigorating breath-work, or simply the courage to begin.

This isn’t about perfect alignment with a system. It’s about developing a relationship with your own rhythms.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" gunas:

Sattva (clarity)

Rajas (activity)

Tamas (inertia)

These qualities move through everything - your thoughts, your habits, your environment.

Ayurveda works skillfully with Rajas and Tamas, helping to regulate them through lifestyle, diet, and daily rhythm. Yoga, in turn, guides us toward Sattva - the quality of balance, clarity, and inner harmony that supports meditation and insight.

But Sattva doesn’t emerge from force, it arises when the system is supported. When your body is nourished, your sleep is steady, your breath is deep, and your practices are aligned with your nature, Sattva begins to feel less like a goal and more like a natural state.

A More Intimate Practice

What happens when you stop trying to follow the “ideal” routine and start listening inward?

You may find that your practice becomes quieter, but more honest. Less performative, more attuned.

The Bhagavad Gita speaks of Svadharma - one’s own path or duty. It suggests that it is better to follow your own path imperfectly than to follow another’s perfectly.

In the context of Yoga and Ayurveda, this becomes a deeply personal invitation: to honour your constitution, your season of life, your current capacity.

To recognize that balance is not a fixed point, but an ongoing relationship.

And perhaps most importantly, to trust that your body is not an obstacle to your practice, it is part of the path itself.

A Gentle Reflection

Where in your current routine are you following guidance that doesn’t truly feel aligned with your body or energy?

What small adjustment could bring your daily practice closer to balance rather than intensity?

If your body could speak clearly to you before your next practice, what would it ask for?

<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" But especially a small sacred nook, a place where I could solely focus on my practice.

When I first viewed the apartment, I already had the spot in mind. It felt clear that would be the place. But when I moved in, I quickly realised it wasn’t that simple. The ceiling is slanted, with wooden beams (which I completely fell in love with). Beautiful, but not very practical.

I moved my yoga mat from room to room. Rearranged furniture. Compromised on Feng Shui. Tried to convince myself that another corner would do.

Nothing felt fully right, and deep down something in me dimmed a little.

It wasn’t obvious that it was because of the lack of the space I was craving. It didn’t click in the rational part of my brain that that was it. I just felt slightly off. Slightly resentful even, and a small smidge of regret towards my new home.

“How silly,” I thought. Surely I can just make do?

But that’s just not how I’m wired. When I have a vision or an idea, I need to make it work exactly - or almost exactly (there’s some wiggle room) - how I see it.

Last night, while going to bed, I suddenly decided to try again. I went back to the initial space I had envisioned when I first moved in.

I rearranged it all.

And with a bit of determination (and yes, some small compromises), I made it work.

It’s small. But I can see the sky. The sun pours in. I can sit on my mat with light on my face. go to your maximum. You go to your edge: that place that’s noticeable, honest, and sustainable. Then you get still, and you stay.

And I realized: I don’t just ignore my edge in poses.

I ignore it in my life.

I say yes when I’m already full.

I keep explaining I’m Julie - a yoga teacher, meditation guide, and writer drawn to the quiet work of returning home to the self.

I didn’t only come to yoga only for health and vitality, but also because I was searching for steadiness, clarity, and for something that felt real beneath the noise of daily life, and the noise inside my own head.

This Substack is my little corner for that kind of remembering. Not the “perfect morning routine” version but the real version: the messy, human, try-again version, buy the kind that teaches you how to stay with yourself.

If you’re new here (or you just want to get oriented), this page will help you find your way around - what to read, where to start, and how to use this space without it becoming another thing you “should” keep up with.

🌿 What you’ll find here

Think of this place like a library on yoga, meditation and philosophy.

You’ll find:

Guided meditations to settle your nervous system and soften your inner world

Yoga practices that feel grounding, simple, and honest

Yoga & Ayurveda to find your balance in life

Journal-style reflections ~ the kind I’d write for myself, now shared with you

Little reminders about presence, self-trust, and living more aligned from the inside

My approach is rooted in understanding our inner worlds, and building a relationship with yourself that’s steady and kind. That tiny space where we can either spill the first thing that rises or we can pause, and choose.

Mindful speech is about learning how to stay awake inside your own words so your voice becomes a place you can stand behind. Most of the damage (and most of the magic) in relationships doesn’t come from huge events, it comes from ordinary sentences said at the wrong time, with the wrong edge, for the wrong reason.

So here’s the practice I keep returning to…

Ask yourself, is this the right time and what is the purpose?

Before you speak, check the timing and the intention. Not everything needs to be said right now. Sometimes what we call “honesty” is just urgency, what we call “sharing” is just pressure, and sometimes we just want relief and we reach for words like they’re a release valve.

A helpful question is:

What purpose will my words serve?

Am I trying to connect?

Am I trying to be understood?

Am I trying to win?

Am I trying to be right?

Am I trying to get rid of my discomfort?

Even if the content is valid, the purpose matters. It changes the energy completely.

Reconsider if your words might harm, interrupt, or feel untrue

This is one of the simplest filters, and also the hardest one to use in real time. If there’s even a chance that what you’re about to say will:

put somebody else down (even subtly)

interrupt someone who is still speaking (even if you’re excited)

“ring as untrue”, not fully honest

…then reconsider.

Not because you should silence yourself, but because clean speech is powerful speech. Sometimes the most mindful thing you can do is take a breath and rephrase. Or admit: “I’m not sure how to say this yet.” Or wait until you can speak without needing your words to do damage.

Slow down while you speak

When we talk fast, we often talk from an overactive nervous system, not from presence. Speed can be a sign that something in us is trying to control the moment:

control the outcome

control how we’re perceived

control the other person’s response

So practice speaking slowly enough that you can actually hear yourself - not robotic slow, not “carefully chosen words” slow, just slow enough to stay connected to your body while you’re talking.

A small reminder I love: relax the jaw, soften the throat, exhale longer than you inhale. Let your words and reactions come from that place.

Watch what happens in your body when the other person responds

Mindful speech isn’t only about your mouth. It’s also about your reaction. When someone responds verbally or through body language, observe how it feels in you.

Do you tighten?

Do you want to defend?

Do you feel heat in your chest?

Do you suddenly want to explain more, justify, correct, fix?

This is where the real practice starts. The goal isn’t to control the conversation, it’s to stay with yourself inside it. And this part matters: You can’t control others. But you can bring mindfulness to your own responses. The power you have is in your ability to be quiet.

When you’re done speaking… leave the words be

This might be the most underrated part of mindful speech. Say what you need to say, then release it. Don’t keep talking to soften it, don’t add twenty more sentences to manage how it lands, don’t chase reassurance. Let your words have space, and then listen.

Listening is not a passive act, it’s an offering. It says: I’m here. I’m not just waiting for my turn. And if you feel the urge to jump in again, just notice it. Process the other persons words, notice how you feel and then from a place of calm and space, allow yourself to respond.

What changes when you practice this

Over time, mindful speech does something subtle: It makes challenging conversations less dramatic. Not because they stop being challenging, but because you stop feeding the fire with unconscious words. You start to navigate discomfort with more ease because you’re not at war with the moment.

You become someone who can:

stay present when things get tense

speak with clarity without aggression

listen without planning the next line

respond rather than react

And your relationships feel safer because people can feel when your words are clean.
<div signals we send to our body, our body reacts to, and these reactions manifest in subtle ways we don’t realise we initiated. We blame external factors however almost everything the happens to us, be it internally or externally, is controlled by our very own mind.

Our bodies need and crave love - we search for it from family, friends and lovers, however you might realise that there’s always something missing, like a tiny hole that never gets fully filled. We keep on searching for it externally but the hole never seems to get fully filled. This is because we don’t go within, we often don’t give ourselves the love, attention and presence that we crave.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

consciously surrendering tension to gravity (not collapsing). Everything supported.

Restorative asks:

“What if you let yourself be held?”

A restorative practice is like telling your body:

You can stop bracing now.

It needs to be yours. A clean, quiet spot, maybe a corner with a few meaningful items, a candle, something natural, a text you love. The point isn’t the “stuff.”

It’s the signal: I’m here.

2) Posture

Posture isn’t about performing peace. It’s about creating a body that can hold presence.

There are many valid meditation postures (sitting, lying, walking, standing). And if you’re sitting: upright and relaxed, alert and soft, a balance of all.

3) Practice

Be reminded of Patanjali’s idea of abhyasa - practice as steady effort over a long time, without break. Not intensity or perfection, just the quiet devotion of returning.

4) Problems

This one is my favorite because it tells the truth.

You will encounter problems - physical discomfort, boredom, distraction, doubt, restlessness… and it even names them as classic obstacles. And here’s the twist:

The “problems” are not proof you’re doing it wrong. They’re often the point.

Because meditation is training your capacity to be with what is, without immediately reaching for escape.

5) Prepare

Before you sit, do something tiny that opens the inner door:

a single breath with intention, a line of a poem, lighting a candle, placing a hand on your heart.

What you do before meditation shapes what happens inside it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" becomes wildly freeing:

You have no control over other people’s opinions.

No matter how carefully you curate yourself, someone will misunderstand you. Someone will project onto you. Someone will prefer a version of you that’s quieter, easier, smaller.

And if you try to live for their comfort, you’ll always lose.

Because you’ll be trading your life for approval that was never guaranteed.

Fear is often imagination in disguise

A lot of the fear around being seen isn’t even real-time reality.

It’s mental rehearsal.

It’s the mind creating a worst-case scene:

They’ll judge me.

They’ll think I’m too much.

They’ll pull away.

They’ll laugh.

They’ll reject me.

Most often than not, it will just be your imagination that creates fear and negative thoughts.

And even if someone does judge you… that’s not actually proof you did something wrong. It’s proof you’re human. It’s proof you’re visible.

Be authentically yourself (even gently)

Authenticity doesn’t have to be loud. It can be quiet and steady.

It can look like:

telling the truth one layer at a time

letting yourself be excited without apologising

letting your “taste” be your taste

saying “no” without dressing it up

choosing what feels like you, even if it’s not understood by everyone

Start small if you need to. But start.

Because the world can’t meet you where you are if you’re always standing slightly to the side.

Love is magnetic

Here’s what I’ve learned (and keep relearning):

When you live authentically, and you do things from good intentions and love, that is also what you will receive. 💛

Not from everyone. Not instantly. Not perfectly.

But in the way that matters, through the right people, the right opportunities, the right kind of peace in your body.

Expression is a homecoming.

And you deserve to live like you’re allowed to take up space in your own life.

If this resonates, I’d love to know: where do you feel yourself holding back the most - your voice, your style, your emotions, your desires?

A realisation on stagnation

I’ve been feeling Just in a quiet, frustrating way. The kind where you have ideas, interests, things you say you care about, but nothing really moves.

I notice I’m very good at finding reasons why something won’t work.

It’s too competitive.

It’s not the right time.

I don’t know enough yet.

What if it flops?

If I’m honest, I think I don’t like trying.

Or maybe it’s more accurate to say: I don’t like trying when there’s a chance it won’t work immediately. It feels like wasted energy. I put something out there, it doesn’t land the first time, and I quietly retreat.

But that logic makes no sense.

This Substack is reader-supported. Why would it? Why would I be good at something I’ve barely practised?

The more I do something, the better I’ll get. Or it will lead me somewhere unexpected. Or it will teach me something I couldn’t have learned any other way.

There’s no such thing as wasted effort. There’s only experience.

I think my stagnation isn’t about laziness. It’s about ego. It’s about wanting things to feel smooth and impressive from the beginning. It’s about not wanting to look like a beginner.

But beginners are the only people who ever become anything else.

If I want change -real change - I don’t need a new personality or a huge life overhaul. I need consistency. Small, slightly boring consistency.

Trying a little bit every day.

Even when I don’t feel inspired.

Even when no one is watching.

Even when it’s messy.

Persistence pays off. Not because it guarantees a specific outcome, but because it keeps you moving. And movement is the opposite of stagnation.

I keep thinking about this dream I have of living by the seaside. It feels romantic and far away sometimes. But it’s not going to appear because I visualise it beautifully. It will happen because I work for it. Because I build things slowly. Because I don’t stop at the first setback.

Things don’t have to be perfect the first time around.

You can let yourself be bad at something.

You can let yourself fail.

You can let it take longer than you hoped.

Stagnation isn’t permanent. It’s just what happens when you stop risking small failures.

So maybe the only real shift is this:

Keep trying.

Don’t give up on yourself.

Let it be imperfect.

And trust that repetition, however difficult, will move you somewhere new.
